I introduced tongue scraping to my morning self-care routine a few years ago and I love it! It’s one of the first of all Ayurvedic practices I encourage my students to adopt as it’s so easy to do and makes such a difference to our health.
As we sleep our body produces toxins, known as “ama” in Ayurveda, this ama coalesces on the tongue as a thick coating. Depending on your dosha this coasting can be thick white, yellowish or brown.
By scraping these toxins off our tongue in the morning we prevent it from being reabsorbed into the body, improving digestion and overall health.
It also promotes fresh breath and improves your sense of taste!
In Ayurveda the tongue is also considered a road map to the body so by scraping the tongue we are stimulating all the organs within our bodies.
When & How to Scrape
I actually scrape my tongue twice! Upon waking it’s the first thing I do, note it’s important to do it before you drink anything (even a sip of water!) otherwise you are just reingesting the toxins.
Beginning at the back of the tongue in long strokes to the front removing all the gunk that has accumulated over night and rinsing it off between scrapes until it is completely clear.
I then use my Neti Pot and brush my teeth. Once I’m finished I then give it another light scrape before rinsing my mouth out.
Where to Buy
I purchased my tongue scraper from an Ayurvedic doctor in Brisbane, however you can find them online and at some pharmacies.
Just make sure to get a copper one if possible and avoid anything plastic!
Taking the time to look after our health, both in body and mind is one of the most important “Self Love” practices we can adopt.
